RONNIE MCDERMOTT
RONNIE MCDERMOTT
It was with deep sadness that we learned of the
death of Ronnie McDermott, a past President of the
Irish Indoor Bowling Association (IIBA), Ronnie
passed away on the 13th of March, having been in
poor health for some considerable time. He was a
man who lived for bowls and was some-one who
could always be relied on when decisions had to
be made, or when advice was needed.
Ronnie was convener for Western Zone from
1974 until 1984 while he was living in Omagh. He
was then transferred to work in Belfast and in that year was elected as Hon-
orary Secretary, a position he held until 1997.
He became President of the IIBA in 1998 and remained in office until he
was forced to retire due to failing health in 2012. A man highly respected within
bowling circles he had a great interest in the game and even up to the end he
was always enquiring about what was going on in the Association.
Past President of the British Isles and World Bowls Councils, he was a
man who had a friendly word for everyone .He will be greatly missed by all
who knew him, especially his colleagues in the IIBA.
At his funeral a guard of honour was provided by Officers and members
of the Association, during the service several tributes were paid to a man of
great integrity including one from the IIBA. We offer our deepest sympathy to
his wife Phyllis and his three daughters Denise, Hilary and Sandra.

Ed - I was stunned when I got the news as I had been meaning to call Ronnie
(two t’s McDermott as he was affectionately known by some), for some weeks
but had never quite got around to it, alas, a call I can now never make! He
was to me a figure I deeply respected. There were times when we certainly
disagreed but not for one second did I lose my respect for him. He made huge
contributions to our sport over the years and he will certainly be missed.
Out of respect, the rest of this page will remain blank and unused.
