BEHIND THE BRAND
THIERRY MUGLER
Before Thierry Mugler introduced
the world to his wildly popular scent, Angel, he was an ambitious
teen with an endless imagination. Born in Strasbourg, France,
he spent his childhood day dreaming in front of the Towers of
the Cathedral before joining the ballet at the age of 14. It was
here that Mugler found himself in the world of his dreams: the
theatrical fantasy world of the stage. From the costume to the
dancers, Mugler would find the vision that would soon become
his future.
At 20, he moved to Paris where his career in fashion design
began as a freelance stylist for various fashion houses. In 1974,
he started his own label, and the Thierry Mugler brand was born.
For the next 20 years, his fashion shows became full theatrical
productions with an endless celebrity guest list, drawing
crowds worthy of a rock concert. A remarkable 6,000 spectators
attended his “super show” in Paris commemorating his 10- year
anniversary, and his 20-year anniversary show was equally as
monumental.
In 1987 after a suggestion from colleague and fellow designer
Helmut Newton, Mugler dabbled in photography, publishing
several books featuring his work. But it was a business venture
in 1988, a partnership with Clarins that made famous the Thierry
Mugler name. Angel, the captivating scent that kicked off the
oriental gourmand fragrance, was born.
After the debut of Angel in 1992, Mugler created an entire line of
fragrances, all inspired by his love for all things celestial.
While his passion for perfume thrives, He retired from his first
love: fashion.
In 2003, he retired from couture and focused on costume design.
Mugler’s most recent venture includes creating costumes for
“Cirque du soleil” in Las Vegas. His creations leave an indelible
impression on the wearer and the eyes of the beholder, a reaction
he intended for his signature fragrance. Mugler says “ A fragrance
is like an aura around you, like an angel whispering in your ears.”
