The butterfly loop is another knot with a
long and interesting lineage. Originally
named the lineman’s rider in 1914, it
was said to be popular with, among
others, telephone men. It started its
mountaineering career in 1928 as the
butterfly loop, later the alpine butterfl y
loop, and it has become widely used
ever since.
