There are occasions when you might want to lift a free-hanging line off Strength
the deck or cabin top, in which case the bell ringer’s knot will serve the Security
purpose well. If it looks familiar, that’s because it’s essentially half Diffi culty Tying

a sheepshank (page 162), or an upside-down yardarm knot (page 164).
Usefulness
An extra half hitch can be added if more coils need to be hung.

1 Put an overhand loop in the
standing part.

3 Tuck the top of the bight
through the loop, and pull
the standing part to tighten
the knot.

2 Form a bight in the line below
the initial loop.
