b) As a mathematics teacher I should know my content as well and understand the
different ways of solving and finding the answers, I should be able to teach all the
methods in such a manner that it does not leave my learners confused but rather
more enlightened. I should write problems on the board and encourage my
learners to try it on their own before I write everything for them and lastly I should
be open to new ideas from the learners as well and make the learners understand
and love mathematics.
c) My teacher identity is more of a behaviorist approach to teaching and a socio
constructivist approach to teaching. I would relate these to my competencies on
teaching question 1-2 by ensuring that I know my content well so I will be able to
use the behaviorist approach to explain it properly to the learners in order to
prepare them for the examination paper. I will be able to encourage learners to try
questions on their own which is more a socio constructivist approach as it allows
learners to try out mathematics sums on their own and complete them.
d) After reviewing the CAPS document I realized that some of these questions
which learners are asked on the test were questions they last did in grade 10 (1.1.1
and 1.1.2) and there seems to be no repletion of them in the CAPs document while
the other that follow were grade 11 and question two is grade 12 content. I think
the biggest challenge is ensuring that learners understand because once they
have completed the section they simply move on from it. So when a teacher explain
the concept they should give learners classwork and also homework just so
learners can do it under the eye of their teacher then try again at home when there
is no one there. The opportunity is that both the question one and two are
continuous because as mentioned before will be repeated in trigonometry, calculus
and surds then sequences and series will help the learner understand interest in
financial mathematics so I could really use that as an opportunity to make the other
topic less stressful.
