Community Engagement – Alternative Plan
Once the Alternative Option site plans were developed, the District felt that additional Community feedback was
necessary and would be of great value moving forward.
These Community Engagement Meetings were facilitated by Phil Herman, Superintendent, along with John Peterson of
the GPD Group. A total of ten meetings were held between May 16, 2017 and June 14, 2017. Two of these meetings
were hosted on Facebook Live. One of the meetings was specifically held for those residents who own houses on or near
the Middle School and the schools on North Hayden Parkway.
Themes from the community engagement meetings included:
• The GPD plan was viewed very favorably.
• Residents liked the aesthetic look of the proposed new Middle School and felt it “fit” into the neighborhood.
• Bus drop-off logistics for North Hayden Parkway school buildings - concerns were expressed about a proposed access
drive close to residents’ yards between East Woods and McDowell.
• Participants encouraged the District to create a bike/walk path to connect North Hayden Parkway and Oviatt Street on
the central school campus.
• Participants expressed a continued interest to find ways to keep students, buses, and cars, as safe and as separate as
possible by utilizing crosswalks or designated pedestrian paths.
• Participants expressed the need for detailed development of logistics, timeline, and where students would be located
for the scope of the project.
• Community members wanted to learn more about and be provided with more specific examples of Student-Centered
Learning.
• Participants wanted more specific information regarding the renovations to the Ada Cooper Miller Natatorium.
