OUR CHALLENGES
CIVIL UNREST
On September 20, 2016, rioting and
unrest erupted in Charlotte, North
Carolina over the police shooting of
father of seven Keith Lamont Scott,
intensifying throughout the night as fires
were set, trucks looted, citizens and
officers wounded.
INCARCERATION
More than 60% of people in prison today
are people of color. Black men are six times
more likely to be incarcerated than white
men and 2.5 times more likely than Hispanic
men. For Black men in their thirties, 1 in
every 10 is in prison or jail on any given day.
SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES
Today 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 — a total
of about 17.4 million — are being raised without a
father and nearly half (45%) live below the poverty
line. ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS
More than half (51.9%) live in extreme poverty with
incomes below half of the federal poverty level — A child who lives in poverty are at risk of:
about $9,900 for a family of three. This translates • Unemployment and poverty as an adult
into a weekly family budget of about $200. • By age 3 have heard 30 million fewer words
than children in financial stable families.
• By the end of the 4th grade, African-American,
Hispanic and low-income students are already
2 years behind grade level. By the time they
reach the 12th grade they are 4 years behind.
