OUR TEAM
By definition, Amere J. May, Sr. is a visionary leader who strives for greatness. He is
best known for his unique combination of fundamental soundness, astute intellect and
dynamic communication which fuels his unquenchable competitive desire to win. Amere’s
competitive spirit, and infectious personality has taken him all over the world. From
playing professional basketball in Israel and Argentina to motivationally spreading a
message of inspiration to thousands who seek encouragement and uplifting through
God’s word. He also serves as the Senior Pastor at the Abundant Faith Word Church
Charlotte one the fastest growing churches in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Born in South Haven, Michigan, Amere is the oldest son of Walter and Christine
Simpson. He is a former professional basketball player, who garnered national attention
for his impressive play at Central Michigan University and Shaw University. He was
fortunate to have participated in the NBA draft in 1997, and eventually played
professionally overseas in the countries of Israel and Argentina. However, his impact
was to be far greater than the game of basketball, because he had another calling, one
that would influence an entire nation, an authentic gifting that would cause great men and
Amere J. May, Sr. women to seek after God. This calling has also allowed him to release a book entitled,
“Overcoming Frustration” in 2014 while also appearing on multiple Christian TV shows
Executive Director in order to reach diverse people of backgrounds, cultures, and denominations.
After the civil unrest in our country, Pastor May had a vision to spearhead the S.O.U.L Trained initiative, developing
strong overcomers who are unique leaders within our nation. After being featured on CNN during the riots in
Charlotte, NC, he decided to use that platform to effect change in his community.
Despite his many accomplishments, Pastor May remains grounded by
his relationship with God.
Celebrating 21 years of marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Amere
and Kenya May are parents to three children and three grandchildren.
He credits his grandfather, the Late Bishop Fred L. Cunningham as
the source of his determination and sense of self-confidence.
