UNIT I
PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION
Stage 5: Adolescence (12 to 18 years)
PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS: Identity vs. Confusion
Children explore their independence and develop a sense of self.
During this stage, adolescents search for a sense of self and personal identity, through
an intense exploration of personal values, beliefs, and goals.
Children are becoming more independent, and begin to look at the future in terms of
career, relationships, families, housing, etc. The individual wants to belong to a society
and fit in.
The task is to achieve ego identity and avoid role confusion
Stage6: Young Adulthood (19 to 40 years)
PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS: Intimacy vs. Isolation
During this period, we begin to share ourselves more intimately with others. We
explore relation-ships leading toward longer-term commitments with someone other
than a family member.
The task is to achieve some degree of intimacy, as opposed to remaining isolation
Stage 7: Middle Adulthood (40 to 65 years)
PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS: Generativity vs. Stagnation
Adults need to create or nurture things that will outlast them, often by having children
or creating a positive change that benefits other people.
Adults continue to build their lives, focusing on their career and family.
The task here is to cultivate the proper balance of generativity and stagnation.
Stage 8: Maturity (65 to death)
PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS: Integrity vs. Despair
At this point in development, people look back on the events of their lives and
determine if they are happy with the life that they lived or if they regret the things they
did or didn't do.
The task is to develop ego integrity with minimal amount of despair
