PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION
MODULE 17
The Learning Situation:
Theories of Instruction:
GAGNE’S CONDITIONS OF LEARNING
Objectives:
To understand the different levels or types of learning.
To differentiate the nine instructional events and its corresponding cognitive processes.
Who is Robert M. Gagnes?
Born on August 21, 1916, Robert was an American educational psychologist best known
for his Conditions of Learning. He pioneered the science of instruction during World War II when
he worked with the Army Air Corps training pilots. He went on to develop a series of studies and
works that simplified and explained what he and others believed to be "good instruction." Gagné
was also involved in applying concepts of instructional theory to the design of computer-
based training and multimedia-based learning. He died on April 28, 2002 at the age of 86.
Conditions of Learning (Robert Gagnes)
This theory stipulates that there are several different types or levels of learning. The
significance of these classifications is that each different type requires different types of
instruction.
Five Major Categories of Learning
Verbal information- stating previously learned materials such as facts, concepts,
principles, and procedures.
Intellectual skills- Discriminations, Concrete Concepts, Defined Concepts, Rules, Higher
Order Rules.
Cognitive strategies- employing personal ways to guide learning, thinking, acting, and
feeling.
Motor skills- executing performances involving the use muscles.
Attitudes- choosing personal actions based on internal states of understanding and
feeling.
In addition, the theory outlines nine instructional events and corresponding cognitive
processes:
Gaining attention- reception
