Social Worker, using the CAGE Substance Abuse Screening Tool. CAGE is a measurement tool of four questions that are significant identifiers of, i.e., alcohol intake sufficient to potentially damage the embryo/fetus.
Item responses on the CAGE questions are scored 0 for “no” and 1 for “yes” answers, with a higher score being an indication of alcohol problems. A total score of two or greater is considered clinically significant. The normal cut-off for the CAGE is two positive answers, however, the Consensus Panel recommends that the primary care clinicians lower the threshold to one positive answer to cast a wider net, and identify more patients who may have substance abuse disorders.
Of the seven women who enrolled in the program, all seven participated in the CAGE screening. Their results are found below in Table 1:

Outcome 1.2: 100% of clients screened positive for FASD will be referred for perinatal services.
As detailed above, seven women were administered the CAGE screening tool. Of those seven, six answered at least two questions in the affirmative and thereby would be considered at risk for FASD. The other woman answered one question in the affirmative and would thereby be considered at risk for FASD according to the Census Panel’s recommendations.
All clients who enrolled were postpartum; however, one client informed the staff that she was pregnant in January (after enrollment). As such, this client was not linked to perinatal services through CCEP, as she had already been linked to Newark Community Health Centers (FQHC) for care.
