STING OPERATION – in combating fences, a tactic
in which undercover officers pose as fences in a
"front" business to gain information; effective
means of identifying criminals, penetrating criminal
organizations, and recovering property.
STRAIN THEORY – a theory which maintains that the
failure of man to achieve a higher status of life
caused them to commit crimes in order for that
status/goal to be attained. Robert Merton, in this
theory, argued that crime is a means to achieve
goals and the social structure is the root of the
crime problem.
STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE –pertains to
intelligence data that are not of an immediate value
rather gathered and analyzed over time and
usually confirms new or recently discovered
patterns of criminal activity.
STRATEGIC PLANNING – a series of preliminary
decisions on a framework, which in turn guides
subsequent decisions that generate the nature and
direction of an organization.
STRATEGIC PLANS - are plans designed to meet the
long-range, overall goals of the organization. Such
plans allow the department to adapt to anticipated
changes or develop a new philosophy or model of
policing.
STRATEGY – is a broad design or method; or a plan
to attain a stated goal or objectives.
