Justina Mutale Foundation Public Sector & Third Sector
Her Excellency, Dr Justina Mutale has been globally
acclaimed as one of the most influential and inspirational
women of African origin.
In 2012, she was awarded the prestigious title of “African
Woman of the Year” sharing a platform with various African
Presidents and Heads of State.
In 2014, she was honoured among the greatest
humanitarians of the world in the Global Officials of
Dignity Awards at a ceremony held at the United Nations
headquarters in New York.
Dr Mutale is the Founder & President of the Justina
Mutale Foundation and its Scholarship Programme for
underprivileged young African women to access university
education overseas.
In 2008, Dr Mutale Founded Positive Runway: The
Global Catwalk to Stop the Spread of HIV/AIDS, a
worldwide campaign spanning six continents. In 2013,
she was appointed as Global Envoy for Gender Equality &
Spokesperson of the International Women’s Think Tank.
In the same year, Dr Mutale was appointed Diaspora
Ambassador and Spokesperson for the Enough Food
For Everyone If campaign, a coalition of more than 400
development organisations working with the G8 to revise
policies that accelerate world hunger.

Project Mission for International Relations; Honorary Ambassador
Extraordinaire & Plenipotentiary to Africa for the World Aid
Organisation for Human Rights; and Board Member of the

He started with a handful of volunteer students, and has
developed and grown the charity into its current position
working in 27 prisons across Kenya and Uganda.
The charity, which was launched in 2007, has improved
the lives and conditions for prisoners, prison staff,
prisoners’ families and local communities. Under his
leadership, by introducing clinical services and improved
sanitation, the death rate in the largest prison in Kampala
decreased dramatically.
The charity has set up libraries and literacy training
teaching prisoners to become trainers themselves. There are
many other initiatives carried out by the charity, and these
are all down to the commitment and energy of this tenacious
31-year-old.
Over the past year Alexander has been working on a new
strategy to develop so-called changemakers within prisons
who can use the law to bring justice to the most vulnerable
in society, with plans to establish a law college and law
firm, offering accessible and affordable legal services to the
marginalised.
Alexander is a TED Senior Fellow, was included in TIME
magazine’s prestigious 30 People Under 30 changing the
world and is currently a fellow on the Praxis Non-profit
Accelerator program.
A trained lawyer, Alexander achieved a Masters of Law
from the University of London in 2009 and was called to the
bar of England and Wales in 2010.
