Welcome to the
Powerlist 2019
Once again I have the privilege of sharing the stories of the some of
the most inspirational people in the country.
Leadership is something we wanted to focus on this year, and
we are delighted to hear from so many wonderful individuals on the
list about what leadership means to them and how they flex their
unique styles.
World Bank Group Senior Vice-President and General Counsel
Sandie Okoro took time out of her very busy day job to talk to us
about how she got to the top of her profession and why she ignored
the advice of a teacher who told her that “little black girls from
Balham don’t become judges”.
Ebele Okobi, Public Policy Director (Africa) at Facebook, a rising star
of the tech world, talks about why it’s important for leaders to be
direct, but also to learn from people around them.
We speak to four amazing women – Paulette Rowe, Netsai
Mangwende, Heather Melville and Sandra Wallace – about how to be
a success in the corporate world while staying true to yourself. Their
insights are priceless.
And this year’s Powerlist No 1 Ric Lewis – Chief Executive of
Tristan Capital – shared some insights into his approach to
leadership and how to empower others as he runs Britain’s largest
black-owned private business.
The Powerlist exists to celebrate the achievements of black men and
women in Britain and it is always pleasure to compile this list and tell
their stories.
I’d like to thank our team of writers, many of whom are writing for
the Powerlist for the first time, and say a special thank you to our
art designer Ching-Li Chew and chief sub-editor Angus Morrison for
ensuring the Powerlist always look so beautiful.
Please share your thoughts on reading it with me on Twitter
(@EvaMSimpson).
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy it.
