Alan Smith
Global Head of Risk Strategy and
Senior Executive Officer of Group Risk, HSBC
Alan Smith is one of the most respected risk strategists in the
City. He has been at HSBC for 25 years in a variety of senior
roles in London and Saudi Arabia. He co-chairs HSBC’s
Climate Risk Management Working Group.
He is also active in several other roles. He is a Fellow of the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, a
member of the Board of Trustees of the Global Association
of Risk Professionals, and sits on the Audit Committee of the
Commonwealth Secretariat.
He is also a member of the Advisory Committee to the
Centre for Risk Studies at the Judge Business School,
University of Cambridge, and in 2015 he co-authored and
published his first book, Dreaming a Nation, covering the
journey to independence of Barbados.
He earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from
the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and an MBA in
Business, Corporates,
finance from the Cass Business School in London, which he
attended as a UK Commonwealth Scholar.
In April 2018, Alan was appointed for a three-year term to
be a Church Commissioner of the Church of England, sitting
on their Audit and Risk Committee. He was profiled in the
2017 Anti-Slavery International Impact report as a supporter
of their important work.
Cricket-mad Alan is a certified ECB Level 3 coach and in
2012 he was appointed the head coach of the development
league team at Harrow Cricket Club.
