Emeka Okaro
Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist
Emeka Okaro is consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Science, Medicine & Engineering
Barts Health NHS Trust, the largest NHS Trust in the UK.
A highly respected and sought-after gynaecologist, he
also has a private practice at the Hospital of St John and
Elizabeth in London. From 2011 to 2013 he was the Divisional
Director of Acute and Family Division where he managed a
£150m budget.
Emeka’s client list is full of top names – celebrities,
businesswomen and government officials are among
his patients.
He has built a successful career specialising in
gynaecological ultrasound and is a certified diagnostic
and therapeutic colposcopist, and a Royal College of
Obstetricians and Gynaecologists accredited minimal access
Surgeon.
He has played a big role in encouraging and supporting
students from BAME backgrounds to enter the field, is a
regular lecturer on the use of ultrasound in the management
of common gynaecological problems, and has been
published in a number of leading medical journals and Dr Ian Nnatu

Emeka is actively involved in charity work and hospital
fundraising. His recent projects included the Prudential
100-mile bike ride to raise money for St John’s Hospice. Dr Ian Nnatu practises as a consultant psychiatrist in
psychiatric intensive care at Charing Cross Hospital in
London. He works for the West London Mental Health Trust,
one of the most diverse providers of NHS mental health care
in the UK.
His specialist expertise is in the care and treatment
of young men, often from black and minority ethnic
backgrounds, with severe and complex mental disorders
such as psychoses and affective disorders often complicated
by substance misuse.
During the past 12 years, while working in an ethnically
diverse part of London, Ian has treated hundreds of
patients with some of the most complex mental disorders.
In recognition of his contribution to the delivery of safe,
high-quality patient care in the NHS and to his continuous
improvement of services, he has been awarded four local
NHS Clinical Excellence Awards.
Ian has also been involved in the training of psychiatrists,
several of whom have gone on to become consultant
psychiatrists with the NHS. He is the Royal College of
Psychiatrists college tutor for Charing Cross and thus holds
responsibility for the training of junior doctors in psychiatry
on this site. Since 2010, he has been an examiner for the
final exams for the Membership of the Royal College of
Psychiatrists, in addition to being an examiner for Imperial
College medical students.
In 2018, Ian was awarded the prestigious MSc degree in
Healthcare Leadership from the NHS Leadership Academy
in affiliation with the University of Birmingham and
Alliance Manchester Business School. On completion of this
programme, he also received an NHS Leadership Academy
Award in Senior Healthcare Leadership.
Also in 2018, he was appointed one of the regional
advisers in London for the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
In 2019, he was appointed visiting consultant to the Priory
Hospital North London, one of the UK’s leading centres for
the treatment of a wide range of mental health difficulties.
