Samantha Tross
                                                                            Consultant orthopaedic surgeon                 Science, Medicine & Engineering



                                                                            Samantha is the first woman in Europe
                                                                            to be trained in robotic surgery of the
                                                                            hip and knee. She has continued to use
                                                                            her influence as the first black female
                                                                            consultant orthopaedic surgeon in the UK
                                                                            on the international stage, collaborating
                                                                            with surgeons in Guyana, building on her
                                                                            outreach work and focusing on forming
                                                                            collaborative exchange programmes.
                                                                              Apart from her clinical work, she is
                                                                            actively involved in medical education, is
                                                                            an examiner for Imperial College Medical
                                                                            School finals examinations and an
                                                                            Associate Editor for the Journal of Medical
                                                                            Case Reports. She is also an Educational
                                                                            Supervisor and mentor for young surgeons.
                                                                              Samantha has commenced collaborating
                                                                            with the Engineering department of the
                                                                            University of Bristol to encourage young
                                                                            black students to consider a career in
                                                                            engineering or orthopaedic surgery, which
                                                                            benefits greatly from engineering. This is
                                                                            mainly in the form of mentorships.
                                                                              Samantha lectured at the inaugural
                                                                            Melanin Medics Meeting in July 2018,
                                                                            supporting and motivating young doctors of
                                                                            colour and those aspiring to pursue a career
                                                                            in medicine. She continues to support in a
                                                                            mentoring capacity.
                                                                              She is also currently researching the
                                                                            effects of low vitamin D on patients
                                                                            undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.
                                                                              Samantha has lectured at the annual
                                                                            conferences of the British Orthopaedic
                                                                            Association, as well as the Association of
                                                                            Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland on
                                                                            the ‘Importance of Diversity in Surgery’,
                                                                            focusing on gender and ethnicity.
                                                                              A graduate from University College
                                                                            London, followed by training at Guy’s and
                                                                            St Thomas’s, Samantha is one of a small
                                                                            but growing number of female orthopaedic
                                                                            surgeons in the UK. She practises at BMI
                                                                            Clementine Churchill Hospital, Harrow Bupa
                                                                            Cromwell Hospital and Ealing Hospital NHS
                                                                            Trust.
                                                                              Samantha is on the examining team for
                                                                            Imperial College Medical School finals
                                                                            examinations and has been awarded a Black
                                                                            British Business Icon Award.
                                                                              Tatler magazine featured her in its
                                                                            prestigious Doctors’ Guide of the country’s
                                                                            top 250 consultants.
