Charles watched Juji preach. People listened to him. They
understood the way he said things. Juji knew how the Japanese
people thought, and he spoke the language the same way they
did. That was the best way to share the Gospel. Charles taught
the Japanese Christians how to lead the Christian meetings and
how to bring people to Jesus. Then he watched and prayed as
they preached and led.
Japan didn’t have a place where people could study the
Bible and train to be missionaries. Juji and Charles wanted to
start a Bible college. But they knew the job was too big for
them. They felt like the prophet Nehemiah in the Bible. When
he was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, the people made fun
of him and the Jews who were helping. But God finished the
wall with the help of Nehemiah and the hard-working, faithful
Jews. Lettie said, “God often does His work with the weakest
instruments.” So, though Charles and Juji didn’t think they
could do it, they trusted God to help them.
Before they could start teaching, they had to find a building.
Charles wrote in his journal, “Today, we learned about God’s
timing. Juji and I got caught in traffic and were a little late for
our appointment with the landlord. We told him why we
wanted to rent his building. He said to us, ‘I want to rent to
Christians. I can trust them to pay their bills on time!’ Just as
we were leaving, another man arrived to rent the building. He
was a few minutes too late! God kept the building for us!”
God’s timing was perfect! And the building was exactly
what they needed. It was right in the middle of a city of three
million people who needed to hear about Jesus. They put up a
sign on the front of the building that read:
