Chapter 7
Grown Old Waiting
Tanaguchi didn’t say a word when Charles asked him why
he had walked so far in the rain. He just continued to hang his
head. Surprised, Charles asked, “Tanaguchi, why didn’t you
take a jinricksha?” (A jinricksha is a small, two-wheeled
carriage, like a bicycle, pulled by one or two people.)
After inviting him into the house and finding dry clothes,
Charles finally heard what happened.
Tanaguchi only earned seven dollars a month. After paying
his rent and buying his food, he had spent his last money to
buy Bibles for the people at his work. He had no money left to
pay for a jinricksha.
Tanaguchi preferred to spend his money buying Bibles than
buying something for himself. That sounds like something
Jesus would do. Tanaguchi was only one of many who became
a Christian and served God in Japan because of Charles and
Juji.
The Japanese Bible school students not only learned in the
classroom, but they also went out to meet people in the
community and tell them about Jesus.
