P. 31
One evening, Charles talked with a young man who wanted
to become a Christian. The man said, “This has been the best
conversation I have ever had. I now know that Jesus loves
me!” The man was a telegraph operator, just like Charles.
Charles was so happy. The first person he helped to become a
Christian in Japan was a telegraph operator. God is so good!
The next week, seven more people became Christians. All
of them could speak English. They read the Bible together and
started a group called the “Telegrapher’s Mission Band,” just
like the one Charles had started in Chicago. Their leader was
Tanaguchi, the first Japanese man Charles led to Christ.
Tanaguchi would work all day. Then with his Bible and
notebook wrapped in a large blue handkerchief, he would walk
five miles to meet with Charles, who taught him the Bible. One
night, he stood in the doorway with dripping wet clothes.
When Charles asked him what happened, he hung his head but
said nothing.
