Caribbean Sea Jazz festival:
A World of Music and More within One Festival
By Linda Reijnders
ORANJESTAD — As a 7-year old boy he caught the jazz-virus while listen-
ing to the musicians that played on the concert grounds just outside his
house. Erik Urre Eman spent his youth in The Netherlands in the city of Den
Hague where concerts were practically played in his back yard. “Out of
all concerts I heard I was hooked on the jazz and that special vibe during
the North Sea Jazz Festival. When they moved that festival out of my city,
Den Hague, I was determined to set up the same concept here. And so I
did.” Now, 12 years later from the first edition, Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival
is THE event to visit. If you are on the island this coming weekend, you sim-
ply cannot miss out on this experience. We will tell you why.
Eman is the founder of the festival that nowadays not only brings you pure
jazz, it has become a world of music supplemented with art, a food court
with 19 restaurants, jamm sessions, three stages and the perfect ambi-
ance. The festival grounds are at Renaissance Marketplace where you
have it all: outside stages with the ocean on your right and waving palms
with lights to create that tropical touch. Inside stage for those who crave
for some peaceful listening in an air-conditioned room. A food court to
have a zip and a bite and more, more, more. You can easily stroll around
and spend you entire evening while indulging in live music of top artists
from around the world. Prices for tickets are more than reasonable and
you are welcome with the entire family as CSJF offers special prices or
youth under 18.

The Program
Friday night the buzz starts and this evening has a Latin touch. Jorge
Celedón is a big, big name, a star in his home country Colombia, but also
outside. The Latin Grammy Award artist sweeps you off your feet with his
performance coming straight from the heart as he sings the folkloric music
of vallenato. Here we meet the parallel; Celedón was also enchanted as
a 7-year old boy just like Eman- in this case not with jazz but with vallenato.
An all-female orchestra, founded in Havan, Cuba, will take your rythm to
the next level. Anacaona is a sensation, come and see! Contemporary
jazz musician Eric Essix is for sure touching your heart with his music and
connecting to the festival’s roots, jazz. The core of Old Havana is all about
music and culture, symbolized by the Habana Vieja All Stars group, music
coming from the bones. The Rincon Boyz are originally from Bonaire but
they reside in Aruba and form the local touch this evening.
