York was an unforgiving place and they
would all have to grow up fast, learn to be
more aware and protective of themselves.
Jerry, (short for Jerome) was now eldest son.
With his very responsible nature, Jerry took
on the father figure roll by helping his Mother
to protect and support the family; and there
was no one more protective of his Mother,
family and friends, than Jerry.
“Lefty” as he affectionately came to be known,
because of the surprising left hand blow he
would deliver in defense of himself and his
loved ones, fought exceptionally well, knocking
many of his opponents out who dared chal-
lenge him. His reputation in Harlem grew
and provided the needed protection that he
and his family needed to survive on their
own.
