Harlem streets of hard knocks. He was no
stranger to hard respectable work and was
gifted with many talents. While still a teenag-
er, one of his talents made him a living fixing
cars by day, while in the evenings you could
find him in the ring, doing what earned him
the name Lefty, as he boxed his way to an
eventual Golden Gloves Championship fight.
While still a young man of about 12-14yrs of
age, his Mother decided to get remarried to
Cecil Liebert, but Jerry wasn't ready to let go
of his responsibilities of being the man around
the house, AL ( short for Cecil ) would have to
fight him for it—it was an unforgettable
moment when AL proved himself worthy in
Jerry’s eyes and earned the title Dad.
Though intelligent, book and street smart,
Jerry wasn’t much for formal education and
decided to drop out of Samuel Gompers high
school. At 17, Jerry enlisted in the United
States Military, first in the Air National Guard
and then the Army (where he did get his high
