Her designs are not only limited to the faces
of the page, but also to the edges. You will notice that when you open the book one side has rows of colors. These are meant to represent the tulips famous to the Netherlands. In the opposite direction you will see a dutch poem.
Trust is a big part of how boom works and is why she demands complete creative freedom. “It is an intuitive decision if I take on a job.
It’s all about trust. If there is no trust, it becomes really difficult” (Boom). When making the No 5 Culture Chanel book, Boom got just that. Since it was based on perfume, which is something you don’t see, but you experience, that is what she wanted for the book.
When the book was released, they sold out in an instant. Boom makes a comment that “this book is
the ultimate book” because if you made it into a PDF you wouldn’t see anything. Boom is said
to not like digital books because they don’t really capture the full essence of a book. “I go from analogue, to digital, then back to analogue” A physical book has size weight and proportion. It has a smell and invokes a feeling. Ironically, though she is considered a digital skeptic, the inspiration of the rise of web is shown throughout Boom’s work. Her books are relevant and today, relevancy is defined by the internet. Her mixed use of typefaces and highlighted neon colors are a godsent to the Tumblr age of web. It would be impossible to replicate Boom’s work, partly because the digital revolution already has.
