Sheila Hicks: Weaving as Metaphor, Designed By Irma Boom, 2006.
Around 2002 Sheila Hicks an American textile designer commissioned Boom to create a book displaying her works. When It was released in 2006, it won the Gold Medal for the “Most Beautiful Book
in the World” Prize given at the Leipzig Book Fair, but this wouldn’t have happened without some of the challenges she faced while creating this book. When Boom received this commission, she envisioned the book in her head all the way through. There was a quote from Arthur Dante that she thought related to Hick’s work. She wanted the text to start large and as you
flip the pages the text gets smaller until
its normal sized. The Yale printing press tried to stop her from doing this by saying Dante wouldn’t approve so she called Dante herself who loved the idea. Boom also didn’t want to put an image of Hick or her work
on the cover because the only people who would buy the book would be those who are interested in textile design. Instead Boom wanted to emboss the front cover with an interpretation of Hick’s work. She knew this book needed to look good and feel good to hold for a wide variety of people to buy it.
