 STRUG GLES & CREATIVE PROCESS
Boom is known for struggling with commissioners. With a creative process that entails seven days a week/12-hour days, her work ethic does not leave much room for critics. After her big break with the stamp book, Irma created the Irma Boom Office in 1991. From there she would get commissioners national and international. One of these commissions were for Otto Treumann’s book on graphic design. When Boom receives a commission, she likes to work with that person face to face.
Truemann’s team however didn’t want them to have to interact. That didn’t

sit well with her so she reached out to Treumann himself and never made a change without showing it to him. When the book was finally published, he and his whole team hated it. According to Boom:
“I compare my work to architecture. I don’t build villas; I build social housing. The books are industrially made, and they need to be made very well. I am all for industrial production. I hate one-offs. On one book you can do anything, but if you do a print run, that is a challenge. It’s never art. Never, never, never.”
