Daily Jail Housing Operations
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)
PREA helps validate the Sheriff’s commitment to eliminate rape and sexual harassment in the Jail.
In early part of 2020, we had our first Federal audit. The audit recommended changes to the reporting
and jail procedures of which all but two items have been implemented. We were proud to see the
achievements that we have made to educate, prevent and respond to allegations of sexual misconduct.

Cell Extraction Response Team (CERT)
CERT is activated in the event that an inmate refuses to leave their cell or is a danger to themselves.
This can occur in general through non compliance, or acute mental or medical crisis.
Security Threat Group Unit (STG)
STG - This team works to ensure that appropriate housing is secured for all inmates. Working
with law enforcement agencies throughout the northeast, the group identifies gang activity and
gang members. This information is critical for proper housing of inmates within jails and prisons.
Security Threat Group Unit is the hosting agency for the only gang Intel meeting in the State of
Maine.
Search Team
In an effort to provide safety and health within the jail, the Search Team may be activated to ensure
that there is no contraband within the jail. The team may work in conjunction with the Canine teams
who are experts at locating well hidden drugs. Items found in searches include but not limited to: extra
books, extra clothing, additional mattresses, sharpened sporks (shanks), cigarette lighters, medication
(pills), tobacco, gambling material, home brew and pornographic pictures.
