THE NATURE OF THE
GHOST
Some ghosts seem to exist only in
the mind, others seem to have an
objective reality, while others seem
to be created by some form of
collaboration between the seer and
the seen.
The apparent contributions made to each ghost
seeing experienced by the seer (witness) and the
seen (agent) vary in their proportions from one
incident to another - but these experiences can
be broken down into three basic types:
First type: the witness seems to be entirely
responsible for the apparition. Doppelgangers
and what are thought to be hallucinations appear
to fall into this category. Sightings of animal
ghosts would also have to be included (as
hallucinations) in this class - at least, for those physical researchers will continue to investigate
who assume that animals do not continue to
exist after their death and, this being so, are
unable to protect their plight into the
consciousness of human beings.
Second type: the agent means to be
predominantly responsible. Most of the
apparitions reportedly seen in the haunted places
belong to this type. Whether these apparitions
are considered to be revenants (a French word
for spirits would return after death), astral
bodies, or earthbound spirits, there are grounds
for believing that they may be entities with some
kind of objective reality. But even if they are, it
is evidence that only certain people can see
them. It may be that these are persons with
marked psychic abilities; or they may be people
not usually especially psychic who are, at the
time of the sighting, in a state of particularly
heightened awareness.
Third type: there seems to be some form of
collaboration between the witness and agent.
This theory, advance by Hilary Evans, the
British writer on the paranormal, appears to
apply particularly to the classic “crisis
apparition” case. If this, all the evidence
indicates that it is impossible, by normal means,
for the witness to know of the agent’s crisis and
equally impossible for the agent to know the
witness’s location and the circumstances in
order to impact information about the crisis to
him or her. If this is so, how does the crisis
apparition occur? Evans suggests that the
psyches of witness and agent might meet and
create the ghost-seeing experience between
them - although he is the first to admit that how
this what happened is beyond the realm of
present understanding.
Profound mysteries
In the end, however, despite all are exercises in
analysis and categorizing, the mysteries that
remain are far greater than any explanations that
might shed light on the subject. If ghost do exist
objectively, what, as visible entities, do they
consist of? Is their essence compatible with the
natural physical laws that account four and the
governor light, radio waves, X-rays, and other
such phenomena - or doesn’t lie beyond them?
And why are ghost sightings so uncommon?
It may be that these are mysteries too
deep for human beings ever to fathom. But
ghost sightings, and man will never cease to
ponder the question: Do ghosts exist?
A Triple Hallucination?
On falling asleep or waking, a brother
and his two sisters would see the baleful
figure of their dead mother staring at
them.
“Her apparition comes usually quite so weak
through the closed door of my bedroom and
stops at the foot of my bed.” - Mr. D. B.
“I have seen her, standing at my bed, just siblings ceased to see the apparition when the
looking at me. Always I have tried to keep her
out of my room, trying to push for a way.” -
Miss. J. B.
“She would come in, right through the
panels in the door, and then she was taught that
my bed and gaze… I never told my brother and
sister.” - Mrs. V. B.
Sibling stress
This is the case of a brother and his two sisters
claiming to have seen, independently of each
other, the ghost of the recently dead mother. Yet
what they saw me have been a collective
hallucination, one induced by psychological
stress. This is the theory advanced by a British
position, Dr. Lukianowicz, of Bristol, who
reported the case in 1959 in the Archives Of
General Psychiatry. He turned it a hallucination
a trois.
Mr. D. B. was a 30-year-old clerk at the
time he reportedly began seeing the apparition in
January 1957, shortly after his mother died. D.
B. lived with his sister, Miss. J.B., a 32-year-old
stenographer, in the house they had inhabited
with their mother.
In her last years, the mother had been
chronically ill, suffering from stomach cancer
and senile dementia. D. B. and J. B. nursed her
at home, and their sister V. B., a 36-year-old
married woman who lived on the same street,
would often drop in to help.
Frightening experience
D. B. and his sisters reportedly saw their
mother’s figure most often while falling asleep
or waking, a common time for visions. All three
found the experience frightening: D. B. and V.
B. reported that, upon seeing the apparition, they
would hide under the bedclothes, and J. B. stated
that he was sometimes too scared to move. D. B.
and J. B. also apparently experienced auditory
hallucinations. At breakfast they were often
hear their mother’s voice calling them from
upstairs - but the brother always heard his name,
the sister hers.
Three other sisters, who lived in another
town, did not share the experiences of their
siblings. Neither did V.B.’s husband: when she
woke him on seeing the apparition in their
bedroom, he could see nothing. All three
brother went into hospital for an operation.
Dr. Lukianowicz pointed out that during
the mother is a last years she must have been a
very trying patient. “Hence are children could
have not help developing some repressed
hostility and death wishes. When she died, they
all felt guilty and responsible…”
The Dr. later suggested that the three
“we’re expecting a punishment for their
matricidal wishes… Thus the image of their
dead mother became…a real nightmare.” []
