HOPE FOR HAITI
SISTERS OF ST. ANNE
The Sisters of St. Anne are a Roman Catholic religious institution, founded in 1850 in Vaudreuil,
Quebec, Canada, and has been working in Haiti for 65 years. During our communication with
the Sisters of St. Anne, we found many common areas in their mission and ideals. Before the
earthquake, Sisters of St. Anne managed five schools and one clinic in Port-au-Prince. The
first construction proposal focused on the Secretarial School and the Mary Anne School.
Before the earthquake, the Secretarial School had 120 students, between 18 to 25 years old,
with 6,000 square feet in space. The two all-girls schools have about 1,700 students, from 6
to 18 years old. Both the Secretarial school and Marie Anne school are well-known in Haiti,
ranking top 5 in the country, and with Tzu Chi’s reconstruction initiatives, these schools will
further provide better education opportunities to local students. Aliso, Sisters of St. Anne
pays extensive attention on building student characters, preparing them as Haiti’s future,
contributing more positive impact to society. Sisters of St. Anne will manage the schools’ daily
operations and help with tuition, as well as assist 13 parishes in Port-au-Prince and surrounding
areas. By rebuilding the schools, Tzu Chi is in turn helping families and responding to Goal 5 of
Agenda 2030, to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. We are sure that
with the cycle of love, the Haitian people can stand strong and help their own people.
GENERAL CONTRACTOR
Each time Tzu Chi volunteers go to Haiti, Overseas Engineering Construction Company (OECC)
provides full support. Year after year and distribution after another, OECC’s vice president,
Mr. Zhang, led his employees in Haiti to assist Tzu Chi coordinate successful distributions,
by providing support in the areas of transportation, food, loading, and unloading. OECC’s
general manager Jian expressed that he will continue to support Tzu Chi’s activities in
Haiti and provide feedback for the Haitian society. OECC has received good reputation for
completing many major construction projects in Haiti, including roads, bridges, and the
national football stadium. Additionally, OECC was selected as the contractor for USAID and
Haiti government. With the consideration of all these factors, OECC was selected as the
general contractor for the reconstruction of the Secretarial School and the Mary Anne School.
BUDGET
The school construction in total cost USD $4.5 million, creating a total of 49 classrooms with a
campus infrastructure, including outdoor lighting, pathways, and roadways.
