HOPE FOR HAITI
Most students in the Community Classroom program were from low economic families, and
some of them even live in temporary tents. Thirty five percent of the children were orphans
or were raised by a single parent. The total number of children who participated in the
Community Class program was 99.
Public schools and education resources are very limited; parents have to persuade schools to
get theirchildren registered. After the earthquake happened in 2010,the school enrollment
challenges worsened, with the only alternative being private schools, which was out of the
reach for majority of the families due to affordability. Without Tzu Chi’s help, it would have
been difficult for poor students to continue their study. Jean Denis and his team worked
locally to search for available schools with good education, reasonable tuition, and within
walking distance to the local community. They were able to get an agreement with two
private schools, the College Mixte Eudec & the College Roussan Camille. All 99 students
enrolled in one of the schools, and tuition is paid monthly.
