WHAT IS COACHING & FEEDBACK?
The most effective leaders see themselves as coaches rather than managers or supervisors.
Here’s the scenario: Think of the coach of a sports team . A coach shares the same objectives as the team, observes
the players during games, and then provides strategy and feedback for how to improve . For the next game, all of the
players start off knowing what to do differently . A coach wouldn’t wait for the end of the season to sit their players
down and tell them what they need to do to win . This same process and mentality applies to delivering feedback within
our organization; we don’t just wait for the annual performance review . If we did, our employees would be missing out
on opportunities to improve . Instead, we provide our management team opportunities to meet with their employees and
continuously work on developing them .
The coaching and feedback process isn’t like a typical performance review; we don’t just check off boxes or assign
numbers to performance measures . We think about the strengths and weaknesses of each employee and tailor the
feedback to emphasize both what they do well and what their areas of improvement are . It is important to maintain
ongoing dialogue as you and your team members work toward the organization’s goals and objectives . Coaching and
feedback is a great way to do this and increase someone’s self-awareness . When done correctly, it is an essential part
of developing people . Coaching and feedback provides the support most people need to abandon old habits and risk
trying new behaviors . Our process excludes scoring with the hope that as an organization, we can focus on the content,
feedback and continuous improvement rather than the score .
During a coaching and feedback session, managers will guide their employees through defining goals and thinking of
creative ways to reach them . Think BIG PICTURE . In the face of wanting a challenge, employees also need to be given
proper training and resources to be able to achieve their goal . Simultaneously, real-time and continuous feedback gives
the employee an opportunity to improve and ask for support if needed .
“Leadership, like coaching, is fighting for the hearts and souls of people
and getting them to believe in you.”
