What are Bio-Toilets & Why are they needed?
The Shear Magnitude of waste on IR:
Some European & US rail systems, deploy a collection tank for
human waste, which is later collected, treated & disposed.
The Collecting and treating excreta from more than 9,000 IR’s
trains, which ferry approx 1.4 crore passengers per day, is a tall
order.
Indian Institute of
Management,
Ahmedabad, in a study,
estimated that every
day 2,74,000 litres of
excreta is dumped on
rail tracks!!
A collection/treatment
system for such volumes,
is clearly infeasible.
