ENGLISH
Ms Jacob
The Transition English course is divided into four modules. Each
module lasting approximately seven weeks. As a result the students
are exposed to various teaching approaches and strategies. The main
focus for TY English is to encourage reading and with this in mind
students will be reading at least three short novels and a selection of
short stories.
Transition year is a bridge between Junior and Senior Cycle and to
facilitate this transition, the English Department has decided to
introduce students to one particular aspect of the English course at
senior cycle: The Comparative. While an introduction to the
Comparative will be the thread which will link all modules in TY
English, each module will have a different emphasis with a mixture of
texts including film, short stories, poetry and novels.
Students will develop a confidence in performing and assessing
performance through drama games, voice work, movement, script
work, writing scenes.
Students will read the novel Stone Cold by Robert Swindell with a
focus on tension and suspense. Students will watch the film Beasts of
the Southern Wild with a focus on mood and atmosphere. Students
will compare the worlds of these texts. Students will engage in
creative writing tasks linked to these two texts.
