Led by Keoh Lean Cheaw and his wife, since its establishment, Wisdom Study Centre had been actively
promoting various activities such as encouraging members to read the collection of books in the centre, playing
chess, singing Buddhist songs, and participating in various academic competitions and recreational activities.
As time goes by, the centre continues to organise different type of activities to fill the children's leisure time.

In January 1987, Metta Team was formed, comprising of more than 30 adolescent members who were excel in
both moral and academic performances. They took the responsibility of serving orphans, widows, and disabled
persons in welfare organisations. Over the years, the Metta Team served various elderly homes, orphanages and
handicapped organisations throughout Penang, Kedah, Perlis, and Perak. From those activities, the members
of Metta Team experienced and practiced the true meaning of compassion. Since then, the Metta Team has
become the main force in organising activities in the centre.

In 1990, it was renamed to ‘Pu Ai Community Service Centre’, aiming to guide its members to spread love to the
public while learning self-love. It highlighted the compassionate and altruistic spirit of Buddhism.

In the evening of 22 July 2000, an unprecedented fire broke out in the Foreshore community, burning more than
80% of houses. Although Pu Ai Community Service Centre was only partially affected, it lost many members
since many houses had been destroyed in the community, resulting in them being relocated. Fortunately, with
the support of the Lay Patron cum former Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, in the year 2001,
Pu Ai Community Service Centre signed a contract with the Penang Development Corporation to buy a piece
of land at Macallum with an area of more than 10,000 square feet. The goal was achieved with the support of
Venerable Jit Heng, the former Abbot of Kek Lok Si Temple, who was also the Religious Patron of the centre.
In year 2002, a building committee was formed, planning to build a five-storey building named ‘Wisma Pu Ai
Medicine Buddha Shine Hall’, with the aim of providing more space to conduct various educational activities
for teenagers and children in order to continuously benefit the new blood of Buddhism.
2013 is the 30th anniversary of Pu Ai Community Service Centre, as well as the completion of Wisma Pu Ai
