Table 3. Another simplified version of criterion 1 of rubric D with explanatory notes.
  RUBRIC D – WRITTEN REPORT
         NEEDS IMPROVEMENT (1)
DEVELOPING (2)
SUFFICIENT (3)
ABOVE AVERAGE (4)
         1 Content
Only one or two tasks are attempted
Some tasks are noted but generally there seems to be inadequacy, and lack of clarity
The report indicates an understanding of tasks,
but execution is insufficient.
There is indication of the tasks to be done but some aspects are left out
All relevant tasks (processes and procedures) should have been/are to be performed by by group members are described in the reporting are noted and defined
          2 Explanatory Notes
This is clear cut—more than two tasks must be attempted If less than three tasks are attempt- ed, then a score may be awarded for this criterion only if the other conditions are met
In the previous example, it was seen that at least one piece of stimulus had to be considered All the conditions must be
met for a score to be awarded for a particular criterion
For this particular one strand, two conditions must be satisfied: the candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the tasks which should have been performed/are to be by group members and there must be evidence to suggest that the description of course of action is inadequate
The rater (you, the teacher) must have
a clear idea of what
to look for as demonstration of “understanding” In this case, there is a precise and finite list of tasks that are required
To be rated as “Sufficient”, the candidate must have noted all the relevant tasks and should also have attempted to define each of these. For example, the task stated as ‘collect stimuli’ could be defined as “the process to search for, locate, collect, evaluate, and record materials relevant to the topic.”
As with the other Standards of Performance, there are more than one strands within each cell that must met in order for a score to be awarded
This cell in the rubric
is written in a manner that recognizes that the piece of work being assessed may have been completed before all the SBA tasks have been completed The key conditions to note here are (1) “all relevant tasks”, are “described in the report” are “noted and defined”.
This required the teacher to match the tasks presented by the candidate to a reference list of tasks to ensure all are described Also, the descriptions must be examined to ensure that the tasks are defined.
