Washington, the beginning of the
holiness line in her family, is a
nineteen-year old college student.
She attends Ursinus College, ma-
joring in biology, as she prepares
for pre-med studies to become
a pediatrician. Jessica continues
the family gift of medicine to the
world, following in the footsteps of
her grandmother and mother, and
while also following their path of
holiness, and love of our Lord.
Growing up in the holiness
movement has influenced every
part of her life. She attended a
private Christian School during
her early education before moving
to the Springside School located in
Chestnut Hill (a section of Phila-
delphia), from the 4-12th grade.
Her mother and grandmother have
worked hard to give her the best
education possible, which placed
on a path for success.
College can be extremely challeng-
ing for young people, but Jessica
made a smooth transition to higher the “small things” like clothes and
education by seeking out and find-
ing other Christians on campus.
“The people I surround myself with holiness movement might consider
go to church.” She is the President
of the College’s Gospel Choir, and
a part of group of friends who host
bible study on campus.
“I do stuff I would normally do
at home.”
Jessica says, growing up holiness
presented no problems for her.
She loves Jesus Christ, and easily
followed the discipline, rules and
regulations of the church body.
Her mother lovingly allowed her to
grow and develop her own relation-
ship with God, while understand-
ing her youth, innocence, and need
to sometimes bend the rules. At
fourteen, she asked her mom could
she get her ears pierced because all

er agreed and took her to get them
done.
When I spoke with Jessica, she
was in the middle of a Snap Chat
conversation with about fourteen
friends, planning a “fan” vacation.
This is a group of friends she’s met
over the years in different church
services and yearly conferences in
Greenville S.C. They have remained
friends from childhood, using so-
cial media to both stay in touch and
discuss issues of interest to young
Christians.
One of the favorite topics is
church rules and regulations – how
they follow them because that was
how they were raised. They don’t
necessarily agree with all the rules,
but they continue to respect them.
They still love to attend the Youth
Congress in Greenville, enjoying
each other in and out of church
services.
Jessica does admit that new
friends that she’s met in school shy
away from the church because of
make-up, and she hopes that this is-
sue can become a non-issue and the
making some changes that will not
push young people away.
