A estreia de Cuiabá na Copa foi em 13 de junho,
quando o Chile derrotou a Austrália por 3 x 1.
Quatro dias depois, a Rússia empatou com a
Coreia do Sul em 1 x 1. A Nigéria garantiu pontos
importantes na fase de grupos, ao vencer Bósnia
e Herzegovina por 1 x 0 no dia 21 de junho.

Encerrando a participação de Cuiabá na Copa,
a Colômbia goleou o Japão por 4 x 1 em 24 de
junho. A partida fez história: Faryd Mondragón,
lendário goleiro colombiano, tornou-se o mais
velho jogador a atuar em Copas do Mundo. Com
43 anos, ele entrou no final do segundo tempo e
foi ovacionado. Também foi marcante, naquele
dia, o agradecimento dos japoneses pela ajuda
humanitária brasileira, após o tsunami que
destruiu a costa leste do país.

days later, Russia drew 1-1 with South Korea.
Nigeria secured important points by beating
Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 on 21 June.

The last match to be held in Cuiabá saw
Colombia cruise to a 4-1 win over Japan
on 24 June. The match made history: Faryd
Mondragón, Colombian goalkeeping legend,
became the eldest player to ever have taken
to the pitch in a World Cup. At the age of 43,
he came on at the end of the second half to
a standing ovation. Something else stood
out that day, the way in which the Japanese
thanked Brazil’s humanitarian aid when their
country was hit by the tsunami that decimated
their east coast.
