TIPS + TRICKS ON SET FROM 1ST PA JESS TURNER + Tech Dir.Cody Curtis
   Iknow the vision
t all begins before you arrive on the set. It’s imperative that you, as a major means of support and another pair of eyes, understand the vision
and the goal.
To do this, I start by talking to the creatives. Begin
with the project lead and get very clear about what the finished product will be. When learning about the vision and the goal, Don’t be afraid to get down to the nitty-gritty; aesthetics, formatting, storytelling, and continuity are all essential to pulling together a project.
When you can see the vision, then it’s time to consider how to best accommodate collaborators. Your most powerful tool in
this setting is observation. The key is to anticipate the needs of the cast and creatives. Watch for hazards,
weather patterns, and even
emotions. Be ready to jump in, fill needs or take direction!
LOOK FOR PHYSICAL CUES
It’s important to be conscious of the physical

cues people give you on set. Does the model look alert and focused? Is the photographer seemingly pleased with the timeline? Assess the physical cues, checking in frequently, to assure the project is moving in the right direction and to avoid problems later on in the project.
IT’S IN THE DETAILS
You have to be able to see every aspect down to its very detail. This includes continuity of costume pieces, hair placement, and even the
background set. While the big picture is important, it’s the details that make the whole picture complete. Pay close attention to aid in completing the project and reducing the need to edit in post or reshoot later.
No one is saying you need eagle eyes, but it IS a huge help to have your eyes open to spot problems quickly.
Bonus TIP: do not take it upon yourself to “fix” what you think might be a problem. The director may WANT the “problem” you see. Just notify them and move along.
