Procedure for using an AED
The procedure for using an AED is listed below:
1. Open and turn on the AED and follow the prompts.
2. Bare the chest and dry / shave the casualty as required. 3. Attach the pads following the diagrams on the packaging. 4. Plug in the pads if they are not already connected.
5. Follow the voice prompts from the AED.
If a Shock is advised then continue on. If not recommence CPR.
6. Confirm that the patient is clear and that nobody is touching them as you clearly call out “All Clear – Do Not Touch the Patient.
7. Press the Shock Button (usually flashing on most models).
8. Immediately Recommence CPR and continue until the AED
recharges and once again tells you “Do Not Touch the Patient”.
Safety Precautions for AEDs
• Only attach an AED to a person who is not breathing normally and non responsive.
• Make sure the pads are firmly attached to the casualty’s
• chest.
• Beware of any flammable gasses and concentrated oxygen
• in the vicinity as it may cause a fire or explosion.
