• Remove any phones or radios from the immediate area as they may cause a disruption to the AED as it attempts to analyze the casualty’s heart rhythm.
• Beware of implants such as Pacemakers and Cardioverters. Ensure that the pads are placed at least 8cm away from any suspected implants.
• Make sure that the casualty is not touching any metal objects such as bed frames or rails that may cause burns during defibrillation.
• Beware of operating the defibrillator if the patient or close surroundings are wet.
• Ensure no one is touching the casualty during the shock or analysis phases.
• Avoid vibration or movement of the patient during defibrillation as this may affect the ability of the AED to accurately assess the casualty’s heart rhythm.
• Use only batteries, electrodes and accessories supplied for the specific model of defibrillator.
Why AED Pads Expire
AED pads contain a special gel that allows them to make full contact with the patient's skin. Over time, this gel dries out and hardens, making it less likely that the necessary contact can be achieved. AED defibrillator pad expiration dates provide a guide to the expected useful life of the item. Please note that use of the pads after the expiration date may present a greater risk of failure in achieving the lifesaving results expected from an AED system.
