CAES & CSET host a successful

Innovation Day – 2 December 2022

On the 2nd of December 2022, the Incubation@ScienceCampus agship hosted by the College of Agriculture &
Environmental Sciences (CAES) and the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET), hosted their
annual Innovation Day under the theme “African Innovations for Africa and Globally”, at the UNISA Science campus
in Florida, Johannesburg. The purpose of the event was to highlight, showcase and exhibit the innovative research
activities that are undertaken by researchers at both CAES and CSET.

The CAES &CSET Innovation Day programme was aligned and hosted in parallel with the institutional Innovation
Festival which was hosted at the Unisa Mucklenuek Campus, Miriam Makeba Hall. The programme comprised of
invited keynote addresses, student poster presentation session, exhibition of prototypes and guided lab tours.
Professor Lessing Labuschagne (Director of Research, Innovation and Commercialization at Unisa) and Professor
Raphael Mpofu (Interim CEO: Inhlanyelo Hub) gave keynote addresses on their respective portfolioswhich sparked
a lot interest and dialogue from audience members in attendance. The movable prototype exhibitions were
displayed at the Mapungubwe Parking Area at the Unisa Campus which included:
• Solar car (Dr Pita Mothibeli)
• Rand Water prototypes (Prof Lukas Snyman)
• Solar reactor system (Ms Nontokozo Mgwaza/ Soiyabonga Mhlongo/ Dr A Muleja)
• Chemical Engineering, Craft beer project and Soap making project (Mr Kabelo Ledwaba and WIL student)
• Indigenous plants
• Vegetables
• Fruits
• Hydroponics system
• MushMag 5000
• Spawn
• Substrates
• Biscuits
• The Innovation Hub
• Astrophysics

Guided laboratory tours:

At the end of the Innovation Day event, best poster presentations and exhibitions were awarded based on
originality, creativity, innovation, potential for application and impact. The following received awards:

· 3rd Prize – Q. Mathebula
