Chemical Engineering Work Integrated Learning Students participated in the Intervarsity Brewing
         Competition

Chemical Engineering Work Integrated Learning Students participated in the Intervarsity Brewing Competition, in
Bloemfontein. Although the brewing competition had 3 main categories which each university was judged on, which
were Best Lager, Best IPA and Best Label Design. Although the Unisa CSET team did not achieve 1st place in any of the
categories in the competitions, the team was well recognized for their African Wild Ale (Umqombothi) by the judges.

In its 5th year in the running, the Intervarsity Brewing Competition is a joint venture between the South African
Breweries (SAB) & Central University of Technology – Free State (CUT) which started in 2018. The competition is open
to all South African universities and aims to promote craft brewing and beer culture in South Africa under the umbrella
of responsible drinking. It is held annually in Bloemfontein and this year in October our Chemical Engineering students
participated for the rst time. Each team participating had to follow the 2021 Beer Judge Certication programme
guidelines to brew their craft beers. In preparation for the competition, the teams started brewing beers using Electrical
engineering brewing equipment. The beer brewing process normally takes 3 to 5 weeks depending on different of style,
then after fermentation process, craft beer experts are invited to test the brewed beers and give some expert guidance.

When asked to share their overall experience, Kabelo Ledwaba, a lecturer in the department of Chemical Engineering
and the Unisa CSET beer brew team leader had this to say: “Participating in this competition for the rst time, was a
learning curve for us and to see what other institution are doing was equally important. This has put Unisa's Department
of Chemical Engineering on the map, as most of the competitors are on postgraduate level while the UNISA CSET team
comprised of undergraduate students. Our students got exposure and a chance to network with experts in BASA
industries. The competition brough about innovative and entrepreneur skills to our students. I strongly believe that next
year , the UNISA CSET team will do great and achieve better results, and will be 1st place contenders in some of the
         categories.”
