“I’m well aware of what your
grandfather did, and how evil he
was, for I saw it all. When he lifted
you from your cradle, he laughed
and laughed, even though his own
son and daughter-in-law had just
lost their lives. And he said to
himself:
“I will name her E. Just one letter. That way, she can never
rename herself, and she can never leave me. She will live in my house
forever, doing whatever I say, for an unrenamed child has to obey her
elders. It is the law of the land. Oh! I am brilliant! I’m surprised no one
has thought of this before.”
E gathered the eggs
resentfully and when she
chopped the wood, she
complained bitterly.
“Look at that!” she
cried, when the axe failed to
meet its mark and nearly sliced
off her left foot.
There wasn’t much wood that evening, and her grandfather
berated her.
“Stupid, incompetant girl!” he hissed. “Un-renamed waif! I
have complete control over you. It’s the law of the land.”
