Her grandfather rose to his full height and seemed ready to
strike her, but then changed his mind, and his smile returned.
“Indeed, I deserve all your hatred,” he admitted. “I have been a
terrible grandfather to you all these years. But it’s time to heal all that.
I will gather the eggs this morning and make you a fine breakfast, with
bacon from a freshly-slaughtered gip, to show you that my repentence
is real.”
E frowned, and called Swie over to her.
“What do you smell?” she asked under the breath. “Is he
sincere?”
“Of course not,” Swie replied. “The character of a person
doesn’t change overnight.Something has caused this change, and it’s
not good. But hold tight. Play along. This may be an opportunity for
you to find a way out of your terrible situation, but only if you use
your wits, not your anger.”
When E’s grandfather laid a breakfast fit for a queen in front
of E. she faked her gratitude, and relished every bite.
“Oh, grandfather, you baked the eggs just perfectly, and the
bacon is crisp and tasty. I can see now that you were a wonderful,
caring grandfather all along, and I have judged you harshly. I am sorry.”
E’s grandfather patted her on the head (which he had never
done before) and cleared the dishes, washing and drying them without
demanding that she help.
“I am most confused, Swie,” E had to admit. “What game is he
playing?”
