                        Cheaper power for Railways

                                         The Railways will save Rs. 1,000 crore every year as it starts procuring electricity
                                         from gas-based power plant at Ratnagiri Power Ltd. It will procure electricity at Rs.
                                         4.70 a unit against the present rate of Rs. 8.70 a unit which it procures from
                                         Maharashtra, said railways' official sources.

                                         Every year, the Railways will procure 500 MW from Ratnagiri plant. Out of this, 300
MW or 1.8 billion units will be consumed in Maharashtra, while the remaining will be consumed in other States like
Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
