HISTORIC BLACK ROCK
Black Rock is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Connecticut. It has a
rich history dating back to its heritage as a colonial seaport. The first settler
was Thomas Wheeler, who settled here approximately 1644 at the foot of
Brewster Street.
The most famous resident of Black Rock was Caleb Brewster. He was per-
haps the most bold and daring spies of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring
during the Revolutionary war. The spy ring obtained British Troop and Naval
movements. Brewster Street is named after Caleb and a plaque marks the
spot where his home once stood.
Black Rock attracts artists, academics and young professionals who desire to
live in an affordable waterfront community on Long Island Sound. It has be-
come even more desirable since the addition of the Fairfield Metro train sta-
tion. It is also convenient to I-95 for commuters to Stamford or New Haven.
You will be walking distance to St. Mary’s by-the-sea’s mile long promenade
along Long Island sound. Public tennis courts, parks, beaches, shopping and
library. Every summer there is a farmers market and a neighborhood pride
day called, “Black Rock Day” featuring a bed race, parade and party in the
park. In the fall you can stop by the Hootenanny and dosey-do!!! Every Tues-
day in the summer there is a concert at St. Ann’s Field and a new tradition
called “Porch Fest” featuring local artists and bands performing on the porch
of various homes in the neighborhood. It’s attended by thousands.
