Tokunbo Alamu Yerokun
Tokunbo Alamu was born to Gertrude and Simeon Alabi Yerokun. He takes pride in tracing his ancestry deep into the
Yoruba ancestry. His grandfather Alamu, came from Saabe in Benin Republic to settle in Iseyin, Nigeria, where Simeon
was born. Starting out at Ireti Primary School, Obalende, Lagos, his secondary school education was
in Oyo town, the historical military capital of Yorubaland, at the iconic Olivet Heights. This was
during the tenure of the legendary school Principal, JBP Lafinhan. These formative
years at Olivet was where he developed life-long friendships and family bonds.
A quiet but energetic lad, Cappello, as he is called by those close to him, played soccer for the
school team, while also serving with the student leadership team (Prefect). In the mid 1970’s, he then went left for the
US, attending Benedict College, in Columbia, South Carolina, for undergraduate studies in Biology. He then attended
Atlanta university, an historical US academic institution with noted alumni that include the famous American literary
giant, James Weldon Johnson. The civil rights activist considered the greatest African American social scholar and
author, W.E.B. Dubois was there as an instructor. An important connection AU has with Nigeria was the Civil Rights
leader, Whitney M. Young Jr., who was Dean of the Department of Sociology, but later died in Lagos while attending a
conference sponsored by the African-American Institute. Obtaining his Doctorate in Cell Biology at AU, this was also
the place where he met his lovely wife, Olufunke, a native of Ikorodu, Lagos State and who obtained
her Master of Arts Degree at the same school. Cappello’s professional experience has been as
university lecturer and Biomedical Research Scientist in the areas of Molecular
Toxicology and Functional Genomics. He has had over 15
publications in peer reviewed scientific journals, he has advised and
mentored over 100 students into the biomedical academic and career paths. Residing in the
Atlanta metro area, Cappello and Funki are blessed with three children. Oluwatobi Adetokunbo, is a
medical doctor in private practice with Synergy. He loves soccer and is actively involved in community outreach as a
youth soccer coach in the Washington DC area. This makes for three generations of soccer players in the Yerokun
family, starting with Alabi, passed on to Alamu and now Tobi and Aremu.
Olumide Adedayo Aremu is a Social Media Strategist/Digital Content Creator as Director of Social Media at Albright
Ideas. He is also the CEO of TheAfricanKing and Pidgin English, a Consumers of Culture, personal lifestyle and clothing
outfits involved in cross cultural ethnic awareness of African culture in the US.
Our girl Tolulope Omoshalewa Aduke, is in college studying psychology and aspiring to
track into the clinical psychology career path. Thanks to our beautiful Cecily, she is
mother to our grandchildren, the handsome and energetic
Adedayo and the little princess Tolulore, who shares a name and birth month with her aunt.
Adedayo is very much focused on his peewee football and considers himself a budding
superstar. With her pedigree, Tolulore’s should grow up to also love sports, be educated and socially
informed. Funke and Cappello enjoy travelling, having traversed the whole of
Nigeria and the USA, with some stints across Africa and Europe. They also enjoy spending time with friends and
Cappello has picked up writing, he is the author of four non-fiction books. Funke is a staunch Christian with a very deep
love of family, actively engaged in taking care of her family and being of service to her church.
