                                                                                    DECEMBER 24
                        The noise of the day of the LORD       In the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie
                           is bitter;                            down at evening.
                        There the mighty men shall cry out.    For the LORD their God will intervene
                     15  That day is a day of wrath,             for them,
                        A day of trouble and distress,         And return their captives.
                        A day of devastation and desolation,  8  “I have heard the reproach of Moab,
                        A day of darkness and gloominess,      And the insults of the people of
                        A day of clouds and thick darkness,      Ammon,
                     16  A day of trumpet and alarm            With which they have reproached
                        Against the fortified cities             My people,
                        And against the high towers.           And made arrogant threats against
                     17  “I will bring distress upon men,        their borders.
                        And they shall walk like blind men,  9  Therefore, as I live,”
                        Because they have sinned against       Says the LORD of hosts, the God
                           the LORD;                             of Israel,
                        Their blood shall be poured out like  “Surely Moab shall be like Sodom,
                           dust,                               And the people of Ammon like
                        And their flesh like refuse.”            Gomorrah—
                                                               Overrun with weeds and saltpits,
                     18  Neither their silver nor their gold   And a perpetual desolation.
                        Shall be able to deliver them          The residue of My people shall
                        In the day of the LORD’s wrath;          plunder them,
                        But the whole land shall be devoured   And the remnant of My people shall
                        By the fire of His jealousy,             possess them.”
                        For He will make speedy  riddance
                                                            10  This they shall have for their pride,
                        Of all those who dwell in the land.
                                                               Because they have reproached and
                   2    Gather yourselves together,            Against the people of the LORD
                                                                 made arrogant threats
                           yes, gather together,
                        O undesirable nation,                    of hosts.
                        Before the decree is issued,           The LORD will be awesome to them,

                        Or the day passes like chaff,          For He will reduce to nothing all the
                        Before the LORD’s fierce anger comes     gods of the earth;
                           upon you,                           People shall worship Him,
                        Before the day of the LORD’s anger     Each one from his place,
                           comes upon you!                     Indeed all the shores of the nations.
                        Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth,  12  “You Ethiopians also,

                        Who have upheld His justice.           You shall be slain by My sword.”
                        Seek righteousness, seek humility.
                        It may be that you will be hidden   13  And He will stretch out His hand against
                        In the day of the LORD’s anger.          the north,
                                                               Destroy Assyria,
                     4  For Gaza shall be forsaken,            And make Nineveh a desolation,
                        And Ashkelon desolate;                 As dry as the wilderness.
                        They shall drive out Ashdod at      14  The herds shall lie down in her midst,
                           noonday,                            Every beast of the nation.
                        And Ekron shall be uprooted.           Both the pelican and the bittern

                        Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast,  Shall lodge on the capitals of her pillars;
                        The nation of the Cherethites!         Their voice shall sing in the windows;
                        The word of the LORD is against you,   Desolation shall be at the threshold;
                        O Canaan, land of the Philistines:     For He will lay bare the cedar work.
                       “I will destroy you;                 15  This is the rejoicing city
                        So there shall be no inhabitant.”
                                                               That dwelt securely,
                     6  The seacoast shall be pastures,        That said in her heart,
                        With shelters for shepherds and folds  “I am it, and there is none besides me.”
                           for flocks.                         How has she become a desolation,
                     7
                        The coast shall be for the remnant of  A place for beasts to lie down!
                           the house of Judah;                 Everyone who passes by her
                        They shall feed their flocks there;    Shall hiss and shake his fist.
