HAVE A COACH
TO BE A COACH
hen I started the
coaching program
Wthat would lead to
me being a certified coach,
the curriculum strongly
suggested that a coach
should experience coaching
from the client side. This
would do two things. First, it
would help a novice coach
better understand the
value of coaching from a
client’s perspective. Second,
it would also provide the
student with an experienced had about myself that were
coach to learn from.
In August of 2016 I attended the value of what I had to
a live event which would
lead me to a person who
would impact my career
greatly. One of the people
hosting a table adjacent to
mine was Barbara Leigh,
a founding member of
BILL KENYON the program in which I
am certified through. In
speaking with Barbara,
I learned that coaching
SHARES HOW HE was one of the services
she offered, and I felt a
connection that led me to
believe she would make a
GREW HIS SKILLS good potential coach for
me. A few weeks later, I
entered into a contract with
Barbara for a 12-session
BY HIRING HIS coaching engagement.
Our coaching would take
place by telephone because
Barbara lives on the island
of Curacao in the Caribbean

This was a remarkable
experience and one of the
smartest things I could
have done in an effort to
become a competent coach. reminded me that it was just
Barbara is an excellent
listener and modeled the
very best in coaching skills.
She was highly perceptive
and helped me see some
things in myself that I wasn’t
recognizing on my own. The
most significant of these
were some limiting beliefs I
getting in the way of me
recognizing my value and
offer.
At the larger end of the
scale, Barbara heard me
speaking from a place of low has been established, I pour
self-esteem. One technique
she used to get me to
understand the impact of
my negative self-talk was to
speak to her as if she had my derived from having a coach
resume. In doing so, I was
reminding myself that I have better listener, seeking to
a remarkable background,
much to be proud of, and,
more importantly, much to
offer others. This exercise
really put me on the track of
using more positive self-talk. an entirely different theme
As we focused on how this
might be impacting me
currently, Barbara noticed
me using the word “only”
as I described the number
workshop I was facilitating.
She asked me why I was
saying “only five people” to
describe the nature of my
Mastermind Group. She
as easy to celebrate the fact
that I was adding value to
five people who would not
otherwise have benefited
from my services.
This may seem like a small
example, but it is reflective
of how I tend to let some
limiting beliefs take over.
Since that time, I have never
apologized for the size of
any group I was facilitating.
That’s not to say I don’t
work hard at trying to reach
more people, but once a
particular size of a group
everything I can into adding
value to those people
. The other benefit I have
is that I have become a
hear and understand the
language being used by my
clients that might indicate
barriers they may have to
their own growth. This is
that will be the subject of
another article.
It goes without saying that
I now fully understand the
value of, “If you’re going to
be a coach, you should have
a coach.”
