“She left there running. She had a big heart, and she tried hard,” Riddle said. “She ran good in the trials, too.”
Icy Morning Breeze topped her perfor- mance in the Oct. 19 trials, which was a :17.792 run that placed her fourth on the qualifying ladder. In the trials, she finished just a neck behind the leader in second.
Her breakthrough stakes victory reaped a $176,569 payday that exponentially increased her total earnings to $184,244.
She also paid off well for her backers at the betting window, going off in the New Mexico Classic Futurity at 13-1 odds at post time.
It’s been a difficult year for most in the Quarter Horse industry and Riddle noted that the win “made my year.”
The Robertsons bred Icy Morning Breeze out of Icy Storm, a winning Thoroughbred mare.
Icy Morning Breeze has raced exclusively in New Mexico thus far, was foaled in the state, and made her competitive debut in June in a maiden race at Ruidoso Downs. She broke her maiden in August, winning by a length at 350 yards.
Riddle said she wanted to thank the Robertsons and her entire team, as well as Icy Morning Breeze’s first trainer, Randy Schalla.
Bigg Dee (Big Daddy Cartel-Miss Woody Dee), the second-fastest qualifier and winner of the Zia Quarter Horse Juvenile earlier this year at Ruidoso Downs, finished in second place for Rex Wells. The James Gonzalez II trainee had jockey Mario Delgado in the irons.
Post-time favorite and fastest qualifier Eagles And Dragons (Zulu Dragon-Effortless Eagle) finished third for owner Joe Rios and trainer Juan Gonzalez. Jamie Leos drew the riding assignment for the All American Futurity finalist.
The remaining order of finish was Midnight Train Mo (Rock Solid Jess-Not Sable
Shes Rose), Your Easy Jess (Jess A Chicks- Easy Your Honor), Out N Gone (Jesse James Jr-Volcom Flame), Dragon On Ice (Zulu Dragon-Vanil On Ice), Mr Money Baggs (Sixes Royal-Money Smart Gal), Hatchi Zulu (Zulu Dragon-Effortless Eagle) and Affinity Eagle (Reagal Eagle-Viva La Moon).
